Agriculture safety should be a main concern to all who work or live on a farm, and everyone on the farm should understand the risks involved and follow proper safety procedures. Sometimes farmers and farm workers sustain injuries, illnesses, or experience a disability that impedes their capability to work, and these injuries not only impact the farmers, but also their families and even their community.

Injuries to farmers and farm workers can occur during daily chores such as feeding, watering and managing farm livestock, when handling hazardous materials or chemicals, and while operating machinery. Understanding and following proper safety practices can help prevent Injuries, lost time due to an injury, additional medical costs, permanent impairments, and death.

Rebekah Slabach, Halifax County Extension Agent, and Cliff Somerville, VSU Small Farm Outreach Agent, will provide information related to the safe use of farm equipment and chemicals, including:

  • Operating Machinery

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Pesticide Safety

  • Lifting and Carrying

They will also provide additional resources to help you learn more about farm safety and answer questions about avoiding risk on your farm.

For more information, contact Small Farm Outreach Program Agent Cliff Somerville (csomerville@vsu.edu / (804) 892-4581 or call the Small Farm Outreach Program office at (804) 524-3292.
