Space. The final frontier. Are you ready?

Since its beginnings in 1882, Virginia State University (VSU) has been on the cutting edge of developing new and sustainable agriculture solutions to ensure safe, nutritious food is always available. We’re always looking for “what’s next” to meet the demands of growers and consumers alike.

And while we’re still working on resolving some of the more pesky growing problems that farmers face in Virginia, we’ve also begun to turn an eye to the next frontier…space.

As more people travel into space—and maybe soon begin living on planets like Mars!—they’re still going to need safe and nutritious food. That’s why Sabra Dipping Company, America’s favorite hummus brand, whose hummus manufacturing facility is just minutes from VSU, is celebrating the fact that chickpeas, the hero ingredient in hummus, are heading into space on February 19th.

Many of us already know hummus is out of this world. But now, researchers will launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore a mini greenhouse with chickpea seeds to make sure these nutrient-packed gems can play a role in how we eat in the future…even on Mars! And while inter-galactic farm-to-table dining is still a little way off, VSU and Sabra want to know what kind of food you’ll want to eat in space, so we can make sure it’s ready!

Take this quick poll to give us your “Food for Thought.” Who knows? Your feedback may inspire a whole new generation of space research! Plus, Sabra will select five respondents at random to win some “far out space swag!”
