What is STEM Education?

Dr. Wilson follows the Virginia Department of Education’s current definition: “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education entails authentic learning experiences for all students with an interdisciplinary and applied approach where all fields connect in complex relationships. In today’s economy, problems are not solved in isolation of a specific discipline, but are solved through multiple approaches and perspectives. A strong STEM educational foundation helps to prepare our students for tomorrow’s world by emphasizing collaborative, innovative, quantitative and logical analysis rooted in a solid understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

Many local 4-H programs have STEM clubs/events. For events, to enroll youth, volunteer with 4-H, or to create as STEM club in your community, please contact your local 4-H Extension agent. For updates on 4-H STEM from Dr. Wilson or the Virginia 4-H State office, follow Virginia 4-H and VSU College of Agriculture Facebook pages for the latest and greatest information!

Virginia 4-H and its STEAM program needs a significant amount of support from donors. Please consider giving today! Follow the link below and select VSU 4-H STEAM from the State Program drop down menu. For potential sponsorships or donations, please contact Dr. Wilson.
