Cut Flowers in CEA


 

Virginia State University currently operates a Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Cut Flower Production program focused on generating agronomic and production data for specialty cut flowers grown in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. These efforts include the evaluation of crops such as aster, sunflower, celosia, lisianthus, and snapdragon, with data collection focused on stem length, flower head diameter, days to maturity, and overall marketable yield and quality. The program also investigates system design, operation, and maintenance, including the development of hydroponic and aquaponic production systems and the management of critical water quality parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC) and pH. This program serves as a platform for applied research, producer outreach, and public demonstration for stakeholders.‍ ‍‍ ‍
